How It Works, Standards, and Evolution

The Ethernet protocol connects local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), the Internet, cloud systems, IoT devices, and Wi-Fi systems, forming an integrated and continuous global communications network.

What is Ethernet?

Ethernet, conceived more than 50 years ago, is a data-link and physical-layer technology that enables data communication over a network, whether it is a LAN (Local Area Network) or a WAN (Wide Area Network). It uses a packet-transmission structure known as Ethernet frames, which contain both the data being transmitted and address-control information.

The original Ethernet, also known as 10-megabit Ethernet, used a medium-access method called CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) to handle collisions that occur when two devices try to transmit data simultaneously. Over time, Ethernet evolved to support higher speeds, beginning with Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps), followed by Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps), 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 Gbps), and beyond.

Modern Ethernet primarily uses switching, enabling efficient data transmission in high-speed networks. Switching is performed by network devices such as switches and routers, which direct traffic toward the correct destination.

Ethernet also evolved to support a variety of physical media, including twisted-pair cabling (such as Cat5 and Cat6), fiber-optic cabling, and wireless connectivity integrated with Ethernet networks through technologies such as Wi-Fi.

Ethernet is fundamental to many modern technologies and applications, from data centers and cloud environments to the Internet of Things (IoT). Its simplicity, robustness, and ability to evolve with technological demands have secured its position as a backbone of data communications.

How the Ethernet Protocol Works

Ethernet operates through a set of standards that enables data transmission among computing devices over wired networks. It uses a frame structure known as Ethernet frames, which contain standardized information such as source and destination addresses used to deliver frames across the network.

Originally, Ethernet was designed around CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection), which checked whether the shared medium was in use before transmitting a frame. With the evolution of networks and the introduction of switches, devices now generally have dedicated point-to-point links, making CSMA/CD largely irrelevant in modern switched Ethernet.

Modern Ethernet also operates in full duplex, meaning transmit and receive paths are separate and collisions are eliminated on those links. Although Ethernet itself does not provide end-to-end error correction, it forms the basis for most digital and Internet communications and integrates readily with higher-layer protocols.

Ethernet’s versatility and ability to operate across many environments led to its broad adoption. Organizations can use Ethernet technologies in local-area networks (LANs) and, through carrier and transport implementations, in wide-area networks (WANs). This makes Ethernet effective in scenarios ranging from data centers and enterprise networks to Internet-facing environments. Ethernet also underpins complex architectures involving Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN).

Ethernet can support applications requiring high bandwidth, such as video streaming and Voice over IP (VoIP). At the same time, its simplicity allows it to connect smaller and comparatively less sophisticated devices, including many Internet of Things (IoT) systems, without unusual network requirements.

In a complex network environment such as a data center, color coding may be used to indicate different network functions, data types, or connection destinations. For example, blue cabling may identify data connections, green cabling voice, and red cabling video. If a network device is not operating correctly, consistent color coding can help technicians quickly identify the relevant cable and connection.

However, there is no universal standard for Ethernet cable color coding. Color choices and meanings vary according to the organization’s practices. Clear documentation of the color-coding convention used in each network environment is therefore essential.

Enhancing Ethernet to Meet Artificial Intelligence Demands

Artificial Intelligence workloads are expected to impose unprecedented performance and capacity demands on networks, and several technology vendors have joined forces to enhance Ethernet for the scale and speed required by AI.

In July 2023, AMD, Arista, Broadcom, Cisco, Eviden, HPE, Intel, Meta, and Microsoft announced the Ultra Ethernet Consortium (UEC), a Linux Foundation-hosted group working on Ethernet advances across the physical, link, transport, and software layers. The initiative addresses concerns that traditional network interconnects may not provide the performance, scale, and bandwidth needed for increasingly demanding AI workloads.

In a white paper, the UEC described enhancements to Ethernet intended to introduce key technologies and capabilities including:

Multipathing and packet spraying to distribute AI traffic across multiple available paths toward a destination.

Flexible delivery ordering to improve Ethernet link utilization; ordering can be applied when required by AI workloads during bandwidth-intensive operations.

Modern congestion-control mechanisms to help AI workloads avoid hotspots and distribute load across multiple paths. These mechanisms can operate together with multipath packet spraying to provide reliable transport for AI traffic.

End-to-end telemetry to manage congestion. Network-generated information can inform endpoints about the location and cause of congestion. Shorter congestion-signaling paths and richer endpoint information enable more responsive congestion control.

Understand what Ethernet is, how Ethernet frames and switching work, how speeds evolved, and how Ethernet is being enhanced for AI networks.

{"_a3a_global_related_solutions":[],"_a3a_global_related_services":[],"_a3a_global_related_materials":[],"_a3a_post_lang":"en-us","_a3a_translation_group_id":"822202ba-03f6-41a6-8679-e3e54b2cff22","_a3a_i18n_canonical_slug":"what-is-ethernet-how-it-works-evolution","_a3a_prod_post_id":"","_a3a_lang_url_en-us":"","_a3a_lang_url_es-es":"
["post-81942","articles","type-articles","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
