Together, they help separate two problems that are often confused: failing too often and taking too long to restore service.

MTBF — Mean Time Between Failures — represents the average time between failures within a defined population or history. MTTR, in ABNT NBR 5462:1994, corresponds to mean restoration time: the expected interval between the occurrence of a failure and returning the item to an available state. Availability, in turn, expresses the ability of the item to be in a condition to perform a required function, considering reliability, maintainability, and maintenance support.

These concepts appear simple, but they are often used incorrectly. MTBF is not service life. MTTR should not automatically be confused with actual repair time. And operational availability cannot be calculated reliably without knowing which times are included in the numerator and denominator.

For Maintenance Engineering, the value of these indicators is not in producing an attractive dashboard number. It lies in diagnosing whether performance loss results from recurring failures, poor maintainability, logistical delays, lack of spares, design deficiencies, insufficient redundancy, or inadequate data governance.

What MTBF is and what it actually measures

MTBF is mainly used for repairable items and represents the average interval between failures considered relevant within a period or observation set. In operations, a common estimate is accumulated operating time divided by the number of observed relevant failures, provided the failure criterion, asset boundary, and period are consistent.

This caveat is decisive. If an organization changes what it considers a failure midway through the historical series, the indicator loses comparability. If planned shutdowns are included as failures in one month and excluded in the next, MTBF stops representing technical behavior and starts reflecting a registration rule.

NBR 5462 distinguishes failure, fault state, operating time, time between failures, and relevant failure. This vocabulary is useful because it forces the organization to explicitly define which event enters the calculation.

An operational way to estimate MTBF is:

Estimated MTBF = accumulated operating time / number of relevant failures

This expression does not turn any average into a universal statistical parameter. It summarizes observed history under defined criteria. Reliability forecasting, especially for small populations, variable regimes, or non-stationary behavior, may require more robust statistical methods.

MTBF is not service life

An MTBF of 20,000 hours does not mean the equipment “will last 20,000 hours.” That interpretation confuses the average between events in repairable items with time to failure or service life.

NBR 5462 treats service life as the interval from first availability until the failure intensity becomes unacceptable or the item is considered non-recoverable after a fault. It also distinguishes time to failure and time between failures. These are different concepts.

A repairable system may operate for many years, accumulate several failures, and have MTBF calculated over the intervals between them. Service life concerns the item’s lifecycle, not merely the average recurrence of events.

This distinction also matters when comparing suppliers. A catalog MTBF value may be calculated by model or testing under specific conditions and should not be interpreted as a guarantee of field service life.

How to calculate MTBF with field data

The calculation starts by defining the boundary. It is necessary to know whether the indicator belongs to a component, equipment item, line, system, or fleet. Mixing levels produces results of little value.

Consider a repairable asset that accumulated 4,800 operating hours during the analyzed period and experienced 4 relevant failures according to the organization’s criterion. The observed MTBF would be:

MTBF = 4,800 h / 4 = 1,200 h

This result means that, in that data set, the average operating time per relevant failure was 1,200 hours. It does not mean that the next failure will occur exactly after 1,200 hours.

Periods without observation, regime changes, replacements, and modifications also need to be recorded. If the asset was significantly redesigned, mixing pre- and post-change data may hide the effect of the change.

Operation

</foreignObject></g></g></g></g></g>
Relationship among operating periods, failures, and restorations used in MTBF and MTTR

Relevant failures need an explicit criterion

Not every event should enter MTBF. NBR 5462 defines a relevant failure as one that should be considered when interpreting operational results, tests, or calculating a reliability measure, and requires the criterion to be specified.

This allows exclusion of events whose nature does not represent the reliability being measured, but the exclusion needs to be technically justifiable. Otherwise, the indicator can be manipulated simply by reclassifying events.

A trip caused by an external power-supply failure, for example, may or may not be considered a failure of the analyzed asset depending on the system boundary. What matters is keeping the rule constant and documented.

MTBF by asset, family, or failure mode

A global MTBF may hide different mechanisms. If equipment experiences communication, power-supply, and ventilation failures, summing all events provides an overall recurrence view but does not show where to act.

Calculating indicators by failure mode may reveal that most interruptions derive from a specific mechanism. This is far more useful for FMEA, RCM, and root-cause analysis.

Aggregation by family also requires care. Equipment with very different models, environments, loading, and ages may not belong to the same statistical population. A fleet average may be valid for management but unsuitable for forecasting a specific asset.

What MTTR means according to NBR 5462

ABNT NBR 5462 defines MTTR as mean restoration time. Restoration time is the interval between the occurrence of a failure and returning the item to an available state.

This is broader than the time during which a technician actually performs the repair. The period may include detection, diagnosis, localization, obtaining resources, correction, functional verification, and other associated delays until the function becomes available again.

The standard also distinguishes repair time, effective corrective maintenance time, technical delay, administrative delay, and logistical delay. This structure shows why organizations that call any maintenance average “MTTR” may compare different quantities without realizing it.

An operational estimate is:

MTTR = sum of restoration times / number of restorations considered

The start and stop points of the clock need to be defined. Without this, two departments may report incompatible MTTR values for the same process.

Repair time and restoration time are not the same

Repair is only one part of recovery. An asset may take 45 minutes to be technically repaired but remain unavailable for six hours because it was necessary to locate the failure, wait for release, obtain a part, mobilize a specialist, and perform final tests.

For operational reliability, the user experiences the six hours, not just the 45 minutes. Therefore, using wrench time alone as MTTR tends to overestimate recovery capability.

Separating portions of downtime is useful because each has a different improvement lever. Slow diagnosis may require better instrumentation and documentation. Waiting for parts points to spare-parts policy. Release delays may be process-related. Long repair times may reveal poor design maintainability.

How to decompose restoration time

A more useful MTTR analysis separates the recovery cycle into stages. This avoids trying to solve every delay by adding labor.

<svg id="a3a-diagram-2" width="100%" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" class="flowchart" time

If the largest share is in “resources,” the opportunity may lie in logistics. If it is in diagnosis, improving drawings, alarms, history, and training may be more efficient. If it is in correction, accessibility, modularity, or redesign may reduce time.

This decomposition connects MTTR to maintainability. NBR 5462 defines maintainability as the ability of an item to be maintained or restored to a condition in which it can perform required functions, under prescribed conditions and means.

What availability is

Availability answers a different question: is the item capable of fulfilling its function when required? It results from the interaction among reliability, maintainability, and maintenance support.

NBR 5462 defines availability as the ability of an item to be in a condition to perform a certain function at a given instant or interval, considering the combined aspects of reliability, maintainability, and maintenance support, assuming external resources are assured.

This means availability can be improved through two main paths: reducing failure frequency and reducing the duration of unavailability. In practical terms, increasing MTBF and reducing restoration time are complementary strategies.

Availability formula: when MTBF and MTTR can be used

Indicator

What it represents

Typical calculation

Interpretation caution

MTBF

Mean time between failures of a repairable item

Total operating time divided by the number of failures, where applicable to the analyzed set

It is not synonymous with service life and depends on the adopted failure criterion

MTTR

Mean restoration time

Sum of restoration times divided by the number of events

It must make clear whether waiting, logistics, and administrative delays are included

Disponibilidade

Ability to be in a condition to perform the required function when needed

A = MUT / (MUT + MDT); in compatible models, an approximation using MTBF and MTTR may be used

The formula is only valid when the times used have consistent definitions

Failure rate

Frequency of failure occurrence in the considered interval

It may be estimated from failure data; under an exponential assumption, λ ≈ 1/MTBF

The inverse relationship should not be generalized beyond the model assumptions

Summary of the main reliability, maintainability, and availability indicators and their interpretation cautions.

For asymptotic availability under certain conditions, NBR 5462 presents the relationship between mean uptime — MUT — and mean downtime — MDT:

A = MUT / (MUT + MDT)

In maintenance literature and dashboards, the simplified form is commonly found:

A ≈ MTBF / (MTBF + MTTR)

This approximation may be useful when MTBF adequately represents mean available time between failures and MTTR represents all relevant mean downtime in the model. However, it should not be applied automatically.

If MTTR measures only effective repair time while actual downtime includes logistics and administrative waiting, the formula will produce availability higher than observed. If MTBF is calculated in operating hours while availability is required over calendar time, the denominators may also diverge.

The principle is simple: align definitions before applying the formula.

Illustrative availability example

Consider a period in which a system remained available for 400 hours and accumulated 10 hours of relevant downtime. The observed availability in this interval would be:

A = 400 / (400 + 10) = 0,9756 = 97,56%

The chart below represents only this illustrative example; it does not correspond to data from a real installation.

Illustrative example with 400 available hours and 10 unavailable hours
<g></g><g transform="translate(225,225)"><circle cx="0" cy="0" r="186" class="pieOuterCircle"></circle><text transform="translate(10.621208831063804,138.34287991424398)" class="slice" style="text-anchor: middle;">98%</text><text transform="translate(-10.62120883106382,-138.34287991424398)" class="slice" style="text-anchor: middle;">2%</text><text x="0" y="-200" class="pieTitleText">Time distribution in the example</text><g class="legend" transform="translate(216,-22)"><rect width="18" height="18" style="fill: rgb(238, 242, 253); stroke: rgb(238, 242, 253);"></rect><text x="22" y="14">Available 400 h [400]</text></g><g class="legend" transform="translate(216,0)"><rect width="18" height="18" style="fill: rgb(248, 248, 248); stroke: rgb(248, 248, 248);"></rect><text x="22" y="14">Unavailable 10 h [10]</text></g></g>
Illustrative example with 400 available hours and 10 unavailable hours

Availability of 97.56% may seem high or low depending on the function. For a non-critical administrative service, it may be acceptable. For a mission-critical process, it may represent intolerable downtime. The indicator needs to be interpreted against business requirements and risk.

Inherent, achieved, and operational availability

Reliability Engineering uses different availability concepts depending on the times considered. Problems arise when all of them are simply called “availability.”

An inherent analysis tends to look more directly at the relationship between failure and repair characteristics under ideal conditions. An operational view incorporates the real world: logistics, waiting, support, resources, and operating conditions. Availability observed by the user is usually closer to the latter.

Therefore, contracts and SLAs need to clearly define which availability is measured, the time window, which events are excluded, how planned maintenance is treated, and where downtime starts and ends.

Availability of redundant systems is not the average of components

In redundant architectures, calculating the simple average of equipment MTBF values does not automatically produce system availability. Topology matters.

Two units in parallel may allow continuity with one unit failed. However, common causes — same power supply, same environment, same software, same controller, or same bus — may eliminate the expected benefit.

RAM analysis, reliability block diagrams, and state models are more appropriate when the architecture includes redundancy, standby, transfer, or complex dependencies.

MTBF and failure rate

Under specific assumptions of constant failure rate and exponential behavior, failure rate λ may be approximately related to the inverse of MTBF. This relationship is useful in simplified models but should not be generalized to all assets.

Assets subject to aging, wear, or early failures may have a varying failure rate over life. In these cases, Weibull and other models may better represent behavior.

Using
λ = 1/MTBF
without verifying the constant-rate assumption can produce incorrect interpretations of future risk.

The analysis window changes the indicator

MTBF and MTTR depend on the selected period. A month without failures may produce an apparently excellent MTBF; a rare failure immediately after period close can completely change the interpretation.

Very short series should be interpreted cautiously, especially for high-reliability assets with low event frequency. The absence of failures in a short window does not demonstrate low risk.

It is advisable to track trends over comparable windows and preserve enough history to understand seasonality, regime changes, and the effect of interventions.

Censoring and assets that have not yet failed

Another statistical problem is ignoring assets that have not yet failed. If a fleet has ten units and only two have failed, calculating an average using only the two complete intervals discards information from the eight still operating.

In more rigorous reliability analyses, censored data need to be handled appropriately. Survival methods or Weibull analysis can use this information without pretending that every item experienced an observed event.

For a simple operational dashboard, an advanced model may not be necessary, but the limitation should be understood before comparing results.

How to structure data collection

When MTBF and MTTR are calculated using different criteria across teams, the dashboard appears precise but loses engineering value. The first step is to define boundaries, events, times, and failure taxonomy in an auditable manner.

Structure reliability indicators with technical criteria

Indicator quality begins with event recording. Each failure should identify the asset, affected function, time of occurrence, detection time, intervention start, diagnosis, cause when confirmed, restoration, failure mode, impact, and operating condition.

Operating hours or required time also need to be recorded. Without a consistent denominator, MTBF and availability are not comparable.

CMMS, supervisory systems, and management platforms can automate part of this collection, but the taxonomy needs to be standardized. “Electrical failure,” “defect,” “shutdown,” and “alarm” cannot mean different things depending on the technician opening the work order.

How to avoid manipulable indicators

Indicators can improve even when the system has not. Excluding failures, changing criteria, closing a work order before restoration, or recording partial downtime artificially improves the numbers.

Governance requires documented calculation rules, an audit trail, and historical consistency. Methodological changes need to be recorded and, where possible, previous series recalculated to preserve comparability.

The objective should be to learn about performance, not defend a target.

How to improve MTBF

Increasing MTBF means reducing recurrence of relevant failures or extending operating time between them. This may require maintenance, but often requires Engineering.

Root-cause analysis can eliminate recurrence. FMEA/FMECA and RCM help review maintenance policies. Condition monitoring can anticipate degradation. Reliability by Design can correct architecture, protection, accessibility, environment, or capacity.

When the cause is systematic, NBR 5462 notes that eliminating it may depend on changes to design, process, operation, or documentation. Simply repeating corrective maintenance does not structurally improve reliability.

How to reduce MTTR

High MTTR is often not a technician-speed problem. Waiting for parts, diagnosis, access, documentation, and testing may dominate downtime. Decomposing restoration shows where intervention actually produces results.

Review maintainability and maintenance strategy

Reducing restoration time requires finding where time is being consumed. Spares, access, documentation, diagnosis, tools, permits, and final tests may dominate the cycle.

Some improvements are process-related: maintenance kits, contracts, inventory, escalation, and training. Others are design-related: modularity, test points, sectionalization, redundancy, safe access, and the ability to replace components without major disassembly.

Reducing MTTR does not mean pressuring teams to work faster. It means removing technical and logistical barriers to safe and verifiable restoration of the function.

The role of spares and procurement

An asset may have excellent physical maintainability and still have high MTTR because a critical part takes weeks to arrive. Lead time and obsolescence are part of actual recovery capability.

Criticality analysis should guide which items justify strategic inventory. Procurement can work on approved alternatives, supply agreements, specification reviews, and obsolescence management.

This integration prevents reliability from being separated from supply. Final availability depends on both.

MTBF and MTTR in contracts and SLAs

Indicators may be used in maintenance, operations, and supply contracts, but they need auditable definitions. An SLA requiring “maximum MTTR” without defining what starts and stops the clock creates disputes.

It is necessary to define boundary, coverage hours, exclusions, criticality, external events, planned maintenance, waiting times attributable to the customer, access availability, and restoration evidence.

The same applies to availability. Monthly, annual, or required-hours percentages produce different results. The contract should reflect the actual operational need.

How to combine MTBF, MTTR, and criticality

Two assets may have the same MTBF and require completely different strategies. If one fails every 1,000 hours with minimal consequence and another supplies a critical function with no redundancy, priority cannot be defined by the indicator alone.

Criticality adds consequence to the analysis. MTBF shows recurrence; MTTR shows recovery; availability shows the combined outcome; criticality shows importance to objectives.

This combination enables more rational prioritization of Engineering actions.

How to use the indicators in Maintenance Planning and Control

Maintenance Planning and Control can use MTBF, MTTR, and availability to review backlog, scheduling, frequencies, resources, and causes of downtime. However, indicators need to generate questions, not merely targets.

Which assets concentrate failures? Which take longer to restore? What portion of MTTR is logistical? Which failure mode dominates? Which critical assets are deteriorating? These questions connect dashboards to action.

A good management routine selects a small number of indicators capable of supporting decisions and deepens diagnosis where deviations appear.

How to connect the indicators to asset management

ABNT NBR ISO 55000:2024 defines performance as a measurable result and asset management as coordinated activity to realize value while balancing risks, opportunities, costs, and performance.

MTBF, MTTR, and availability are evidence of performance, but they are not final objectives. They may indicate a need for maintenance, renewal, redesign, new spares, supplier change, or investment in redundancy.

As an asset approaches end of life, increasing MTBF through maintenance may cease to be economically rational. The decision should consider lifecycle cost and residual risk.

When indicators point to design, not maintenance

When history shows low availability due to obsolescence, lack of redundancy, or systematic failures, continuing to increase maintenance may destroy value. The data should feed retrofit, renewal, and lifecycle decisions.

Turn performance into asset-management decisions

If recurring failures result from undersizing, an unsuitable environment, poor selectivity, a single point of failure, poor accessibility, or obsolete technology, the solution needs to move beyond routine maintenance.

MTBF and MTTR history helps build the business case for retrofit and renewal. Lost availability can be converted into operational impact. Recurring causes show where the current design limits performance.

This is one of the most important connections between Maintenance Engineering and Project Engineering: using operational evidence to improve future architecture.

When to engage specialized support

Engineering support is useful when existing indicators are inconsistent, failure taxonomy needs cleansing, complex redundant systems exist, the organization wants to structure RAM analysis, or history needs to support renewal and CAPEX decisions.

The work may involve data review, definition of criteria, reliability analysis, FMEA/FMECA, criticality, availability modeling, failure analysis, and an improvement plan.

In critical facilities, the objective is not merely to calculate MTBF and MTTR. It is to explain why availability is below what is required and which interventions offer the greatest risk reduction.

Final considerations

MTBF, MTTR, and availability are complementary indicators. MTBF helps observe failure recurrence; MTTR, when defined as restoration time, shows recovery capability; availability summarizes the ability of the asset or system to fulfill the required function over the considered time.

Rigor lies in the definitions. MTBF is not service life, MTTR is not necessarily repair time, and the simplified availability formula is only valid when the times used are compatible with the model.

Reliable indicators require consistent boundaries, failure criteria, time windows, and taxonomy. When integrated with criticality, Maintenance Planning and Control, and asset management, they stop being dashboard numbers and begin guiding maintenance, spares, projects, renewal, and lifecycle decisions.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Technical references

[1] BRAZILIAN ASSOCIATION OF TECHNICAL STANDARDS. In operations, it is used to observe the recurrence of relevant failures in repairable items, always within defined criteria and periods.

Is MTBF the service life of equipment?
No. MTBF represents an average between failures in repairable items. Service life describes the lifecycle period until failure intensity becomes unacceptable or the item ceases to be recoverable according to the adopted criteria.

What does MTTR mean in NBR 5462?
In ABNT NBR 5462:1994, MTTR corresponds to mean restoration time, that is, the average interval between failure and returning the item to an available state.

Is MTTR the same as repair time?
Not necessarily. Restoration may include detection, diagnosis, waiting for resources, correction, and functional verification. Actual repair time is only one possible portion.

How do you calculate availability using MTBF and MTTR?
The formula MTBF/(MTBF+MTTR) is a common approximation when MTBF represents available time between failures and MTTR represents all relevant downtime in the same model. NBR 5462 expresses asymptotic availability, under certain conditions, as MUT/(MUT+MDT).

How can availability be improved?
By reducing failure frequency, reducing restoration time, or both. This may involve maintenance, monitoring, spares, process improvement, training, redundancy, redesign, or asset renewal.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Additional technical resources

Related services

Reliability and Availability Engineering

Maintenance Engineering

Engineering Asset Management

Related solutions

Requirements, Evidence, and Acceptance Criteria Management

Field Applications, Inspection, and Technical Data Collection

Core content on the topic

RAM Analysis: Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability

Related technical content

Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM)

Weibull Analysis

Maintenance Planning and Control

Asset Reliability Diagnosis

</details>

Understand MTBF, MTTR and availability: definitions, calculations, restoration time, failure rate, reliability data, SLAs, criticality and asset performance.

{"_a3a_global_related_solutions":[],"_a3a_global_related_services":[],"_a3a_global_related_materials":[],"_a3a_post_lang":"en-us","_a3a_translation_group_id":"60a4f724-77f5-4f64-9520-278f07b413c1","_a3a_i18n_canonical_slug":"mtbf-mttr-availability-asset-reliability-performance-2","_a3a_prod_post_id":"","_a3a_lang_url_en-us":"","_a3a_lang_url_es-es":"
["post-81728","articles","type-articles","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
