Founded in 1940, ABNT develops, publishes, and updates standards that establish technical criteria for safety, performance, and compliance in several areas of engineering, industry, and services. NBR 5419, for example, is a standard published by ABNT that specifically addresses the protection of structures against lightning discharges. Its technical content is nationally recognized and follows international principles established by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). Compliance with ABNT standards is essential to ensure safety, reduce risks, and assure the technical conformity of projects and installations.

NBR 5419-1:2015 – Protection of Structures Against Lightning, establishes the general principles of lightning protection for buildings, industrial installations, critical structures, and systems subject to overvoltage surges. It is the foundation of a normative set that includes four complementary parts, organized to guide everything from risk analysis to the installation and maintenance of the LPS (Lightning Protection System).

In this article, we present the first four items of Part 1 of the standard — Scope, References, Terms, and Symbols — explaining their role and how they technically support design decisions.

[elementor-template id=”24446″]

Item 1 – Scope

The first item defines the scope of the standard. NBR 5419-1 applies to any structure subject to direct or indirect lightning discharge, including buildings, industrial installations, open areas with exposed equipment, and power or data lines. The focus is to protect:

People;

Physical and cultural assets;

The continuity of essential services.

In addition, the scope establishes that protection must consider direct and indirect damage, acting both on structural components and on internal systems.

Item 2 – Normative references

This item guides professionals to consult other complementary standards that are indispensable for the correct application of NBR 5419, such as:

Electrical installation standards (for example: NBR 5410);

Standards for measurement, grounding, and surge protection;

International standards (IEC 62305) used as a conceptual basis.

These references broaden the technical context and reinforce the need for integration between disciplines during the design stage.

Item 3 – Terms and definitions

Here, the standard establishes standardized terminology to ensure unified technical understanding among designers, installers, inspectors, and contracting parties. Some fundamental terms defined in this item are:

Lightning discharge: sudden transfer of electrical energy between clouds or between cloud and ground;

LPS: system composed of internal and external elements intended to capture and dissipate the energy of the discharge;

Equipotential bonding: technique used to reduce dangerous voltages by interconnecting metallic masses to the grounding system;

LPZ zones: areas with different levels of exposure and protection against the effects of lightning discharges.

These definitions are essential for correctly interpreting the normative requirements in the following chapters.

Item 4 – Symbols and units

The standard standardizes the symbols used in formulas, tables, and calculation criteria, as well as the International System (SI) units for current, voltage, resistance, energy, and distance.

This item is indispensable to avoid interpretation errors in technical documents and in the use of calculation tools, such as risk-assessment spreadsheets and LPS sizing tools.

Part 1 of NBR 5419 establishes the theoretical and conceptual basis of the lightning protection system. Understanding its first items is essential to correctly interpret the technical criteria of the standard, especially from Chapter 5 onward, where the principles governing the external and internal LPS are presented.

In the next article, we will deepen this content and show how the protection system is divided, which elements compose it, and how they interact to ensure safety, compliance, and technical efficiency.

Follow A3A Engenharia and keep up with this complete technical series on NBR 5419 – with practical application and an engineering perspective.

Need an LPS design?
