However, to optimize costs and effort, you should focus on which camera and configuration will meet your operational requirements. For example, do you need to be able to identify people in the video, or only detect that someone is present in some form?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We distinguish among the needs for detection, observation, recognition, and identification. Sometimes we refer to these requirements by the acronym DORI &#8211; Detection, Observation, Recognition, and Identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">Lenses<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The lens is the &#8220;camera&#8217;s eye,&#8221; and its features and capabilities are therefore very important. Field of view, resolution, light sensitivity, and depth of field must be carefully considered and matched to your needs when choosing the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">Image Sensor<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The image sensor is an essential component of any digital camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The image sensor records the light that falls on the lens from all parts of the scene and converts it into electrical signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These signals provide the information needed so that the camera, after further amplification and processing, can reproduce a digital image of the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The camera image sensor is composed of millions of photodetectors (photosensitive diodes), known as pixels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each pixel continues to capture light (photons) over a defined period of time. This is the camera exposure time, or exposure interval. Once this period has elapsed, the pixel is read and its charge is measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new exposure interval begins and the pixel can capture new photons again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sensor quality has improved considerably, and megapixel, HDTV, and 4K sensors are widely available on the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as the surveillance industry continues to advance and offer increasingly higher resolutions, manufacturers often use the same sensor size to avoid the higher cost associated with using a larger sensor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means they need to allocate more photodetectors in the same space, making each pixel smaller, which causes them to capture a smaller amount of light. Consequently, the charge after each exposure interval will be lower and the electrical signal of each pixel will require more amplification and will be noisier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">Field of View<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Field of view (FOV) determines the area a camera can cover. A wide FOV is ideal for covering large areas, while a narrower FOV can be used to focus on specific areas.
